Fly Fishing Rod List 2022 – New Data Table

Fly fishing rod

Here is a list of the new fly rods for 2022. The good thing about this data table is you can see the fly rod brand and model with different weight and rod lengths. This makes it easy to compare fly rod specifications.

Included in the list is Sage Fly Rods, G.Loomis, Hardy, Fenwick Rods, Orvis and many more brands. (In 2023 we will add more new fly fishing brands.) These fly fishing rod manufactures have been building some of the best fly rods for many years.

Also this list covers how many sections or pieces the model has.

The table doesn’t cover every brand of fly rod, but it does cover some good quality fly rod manufactures and models.

While some of these rod can be expensive, especially the new 2022 fly rods from some manufactures, they are quality rods and will last a lifetime if looked after. Also some models can be purchased on sale later on throughout the year.

Second hand fly rods from one of these brands can also be an option for the angler who wants a more budget friendly fly rod.

Some manufactures don’t state if the fly rod is a fast or medium action, but most do. The action of the fly rod will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

This information is taken on, early in the year, so some new fly rods might be introduced later on in the year and may not be on the list until updated later on.

What Does The Weight Of A Fly Rod Mean?

Fly fishing rods have marked weights on them, as an example a 6 weight. (Or 6 wt. for short.) The weight of the fly rod is designed to match the fly line weight.

As an example a 5 weight fly rod would match a 5 weight fly line. (For some rods you can go one size up or down, depending on angler skill, preference, rod action, etc.)

The weights can go from around 0 weight all the way up to 16 weight for saltwater big fish.

With 3 weight up to around 8 weight being more common for freshwater fish.

While 8 weight up to 12 weight for saltwater fish.

What Size Fly Rod And Fly Line Should I Use?

Targeted fish size, is a big factor when choosing a fly rod weight size.

The angler’s preference, tradition, size of flies used, weather conditions, and lake / river size can also determine what size fly line and fly rod to use.

Are you chasing small pan fish, big bass or trophy trout? Or perhaps chasing saltwater fish?

A 5 wt. or 6 wt. can be used for medium size fish and is a common, multipurpose size for fly fishing.

A 3 weight would be used for small creeks and small fish. While a larger 8 weight could be used for saltwater fish and salmon.

However, a heavier fly line like a 7 wt. or 8 wt. can punch into the wind and help fight bigger fish.

A heavier weight line and rod can cast bigger artificial flies easier.

A small weight can help cast and present small flies delicately on the water for fussy or spooky fish.

What Length Fly Rod Should I Choose?

For the beginner, a rod length of around 8’ 6“ length, or 9 foot length is common and versatile to use.
